On the first Tuesday of September I'd decided that I'd go out portable for the UKAC. The weather had been dry, and my operating spot wouldn't be muddy for a change. In addition the Hepburn forecast looked good - not one to be missed.

My setup is modest, and FT817 driving a 50W linear, a portable mast (manual rotation), RG213 coax (it stands up to being unrolled and rolled rather better than that expensive stuff) and an off the shelf (of LAM) beam.

The beam had been refurbished after encountering attention by the Bovines of Brimham, so the elements are rather more substantial than originally supplied. Its first real try out in anger.

Powered by a 110Ah leisure battery.

Start was 2000BST, but had to sit and wait whilst tuned to an OZ... then bang, start, and off we go with a 700km plus contact landed in the log.

Packed in before 2200BST, some of us still have to go to work, and packed the car without losing any bits.

Yes I'd originally decided to have a go at UKAC as I had an FT290R and any chance to do some SSB on 2m looked good. It's sort of grown on me. There's some satisfaction about landing a good tropo contact, and it's the second time I'd worked OZ on 2m. Thoroughly enjoyable, a good night out.

The term "73" is commonly used in ham radio and other forms of communication as a sign-off or closing statement. Its origins date back to the early days of telegraphy and Morse code.

In the 19th century, telegraph operators often used a set of standardized codes to communicate more efficiently, as sending messages letter by letter was time-consuming. These codes were known as "Q codes," and they covered a variety of communication situations. One of these codes, QSL, was used to indicate "I acknowledge receipt" or "I confirm receipt."

As radio communication began to develop, the practice of using Q codes continued. The Q code "QSL?" was used to ask if a message had been received and understood. Responding to this query, the sender would use "QSL" to confirm receipt and understanding.

However, as radio communication became more widespread and voice transmissions became common, using Q codes like "QSL?" and "QSL" became less practical. Operators started to prefer using phonetic codes to improve clarity during voice communications. This is where "73" comes into play.

"73" is a shorthand way of saying "best regards" or "goodbye" in ham radio communication. It's believed to have been derived from the Phillips Code, a system of abbreviations used in telegraphy. In this code, "73" stood for "my compliments" or "accept my regards."

Over time, "73" transitioned from a simple numeric code to a verbal expression, becoming a universally recognized way of ending a conversation in ham radio and related communities. Its meaning as a sign-off has remained consistent, even as communication technologies have evolved.

In summary, the story of "73" in ham radio use is one of adaptation and evolution, originating from telegraphy codes and finding its place as a friendly and concise way to bid farewell in radio communication.
